NASHVILLE, Tenn. – September 30, 2011 – The Nashville Music Garden, a one-of-a-kind public garden that pays tribute to the artists, songs and industry leaders who have contributed to making Music City one of the most unique cities in the world, marked its second anniversary yesterday with an ice cream social event and the unveiling of a custom-designed "Spirit of Nashville" illustration recognizing the Garden as one of the city’s newest landmarks.  Representatives from downtown businesses and friends of the garden, including leadership from the mayor's office and the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau, as well as from Universal Music Group, GAC TV and the Hilton Downtown Nashville Hotel, gathered to celebrate with Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, photo booth fun and the unveiling of the poster, which will be added to the "Spirit of Nashville" Collection. “I am thrilled that the Nashville Music Garden is being recognized as one of Nashville's iconic landmarks," said founder of the Garden, Pat Bullard. “Designers Joel Anderson and Ligia Teodosiu interpreted the garden and its place in Nashville beautifully.”

Joel Anderson, founder of the Anderson Design Group, responsible for the "Spirit of Nashville" collection, was on hand for the presentation. "As founder of Anderson Design Group, I created the 'Spirit of Nashville' Collection to celebrate Music City’s history and charm and promote graphic design as an art form. Back in 2003, my designers and I launched the collection by depicting our own personal favorite landmarks, establishments and themes. Over the years, we have added over 70 more prints to the collection. The goal has always been to create art that honors and promotes the aspects of Nashville that make this city unique—the Art and Soul of Music City. Our new 'Nashville Music Garden' print fits the bill perfectly!" says Anderson. Guests were given the opportunity to purchase a signed copy of the poster, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Nashville Music Garden fund. Prints are also available for purchase online at www.SpiritOfNashville.com . A portion of the online sales will also go to the Nashville Music Garden Fund as an effort to help sustain the Nashville Music Garden.

In addition to the "Spirit of Nashville" designers attending the event, co-owner of Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams was on-site, adding the crowning touch by serving up sweet confections. According to co-owner Tom Bauer, it was a wonderful way to become more familiar with all that Nashville has to offer.  "We feel so welcome here and we appreciate being involved with the city's exciting music industry. Events like these are exactly where Jeni's wants to be. It's so great to work with people like Pat Bullard who are so passionate about Nashville," explains Bauer.

Rare DeFord Bailey Record is Prominent Addition to New Exhibit at Fontanel

Nashville, Tenn. –February 23, 2011—Pat Bullard, a LifeWorks Foundation trustee and founder of the Nashville Music Garden, recently presented The Fontanel Mansion & Farm a priceless piece of Nashville’s music history, a rare, original 78 recording of DeFord Bailey’s “Ice Water Blues/Davidson County Blues” accompanied by photos of Bailey with the original members of the Grand Ole Opry cast, circa 1920.

Noted DeFord Bailey biographer David Morton gifted the record to the Nashville Music Garden and feels its place at The Fontanel Mansion is fitting. “I gave this record to the Nashville Music Garden, because of their dedication to making people aware of DeFord Bailey and his most significant role in the early development of the country music industry in Nashville," said Morton. "The record is one of my favorites with 'Ice Water Blues,' DeFord’s classic rendition of a fiddle tune he learned from his grandfather, and 'Davidson County Blues,' a version of his popular 'Cow Cow Blues.' I am amazed and pleased with what the Nashville Music Garden has done with the record.”

Dubbed “The Harmonica Wizard” and breaking ground as the first African-American performer on the Grand Ole Opry, Bailey has been called “the most influential harmonica player in the first half of the 20th century.”  In fact, longtime Opry announcer, “Judge” George D. Hay, consistently credited Bailey as the inspiration for the naming of the Opry. On October 2, 1928, Judge Hay arranged for Victor Records to make the first known recordings in Nashville and specially requested that Bailey be part of the history-making session held in the city’s YMCA building. Bailey recorded eight tunes in this session, two of which are on the record now displayed at Fontanel.

Marc Oswald, co-owner of Fontanel, says the one-of-a-kind memorabilia is a valuable part of Fontanel’s collection. “Our original intention for Fontanel was not only to give Barbara Mandrell’s fans the opportunity to tour the home she and her husband, Ken Dudney, built, but also to see and touch music history dating back many decades. This DeFord Bailey recording is a noteworthy piece of history we are very proud to display.”

Bailey was controversially ousted from the Grand Ole Opry in 1941 with sources at the time citing licensing issues. While he continued to play his harmonica every day of his life while operating a shoe shine shop, he once lamented that he often played to “four walls and to God.” After years of faithful lobbying by friends and fans, DeFord Bailey was inducted into The Country Music Hall of Fame in November 2005, and he is now recognized as a critical part of Nashville’s music history.

“It is a wonderful idea to display and recognize my father's music, since he was one of the first stars of the Grand Ole Opry, along with Roy Acuff, Minnie Pearl, Bill Monroe and Uncle Dave Macon,” said Bailey’s daughter, Christine Bailey Craig.

“The Music City Walk of Fame Park has become a significant place for Nashville to honor the musicians who have made an impact on this city,” said Butch Spyridon, President of the Nashville Convention & Visitors Bureau. “The addition of The Nashville Music Garden adds to that celebration and also shows the pride we have in caring for and preserving the landscape as well as the music.”

Many roses from the Nashville Music Garden Collection are available by visiting Whit Wells’ Mid-South Roses.  Wells, a renowned hybridizer has and continues to create and name roses for the Nashville Music Garden.  In fact, Wells’ rose Shameless, from the Nashville Music Garden Collection, won top honors at the Louisville Rose Show on Saturday, September 18.  In addition to Wells’ Mid-South Roses, Crescendo can be purchased at S & W Greenhouse in White House, Tenn.

Walk of Fame Park is not the only place to “stop and smell the roses” of the Nashville Music Garden Collection; visitors can also find the flowers in Centennial Park, at Owen Bradley Memorial Park, on the grounds of Belmont University, the famous Loveless Cafe, and soon, Fontanel Mansion & Farm.

The garden is funded by LifeWorks Foundation and is supported by MetroParks, the Nashville Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum, the Hilton Downtown Nashville and the Nashville Rose Society. March 29, 2010

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – March 29, 2010 -- The Nashville Symphony was honored by Jackson & Perkins with a brand new rose variety, aptly named ‘Crescendo.’ Crescendo is the newest addition to the Nashville Music Garden, located in downtown Nashville in Hall of Fame Park.  Crescendo is the first rose to be named in honor of a specific symphony orchestra.  The new rose’s unveiling, held at Schermerhorn Symphony Center’s Martha Rivers Ingram Garden Courtyard at 10:30 a.m. on March 24, 2010 was a star studded affair. The event included remarks by celebrity guests Brenda Lee, Barbara Mandrell and Pam Tillis, all of whom have been honored with their own roses from the Nashville Music Garden.

Pat Bullard, a LifeWorks trustee and founder of the Nashville Music Garden, along with the Nashville Rose Society approached hybridizers Jackson & Perkins with their desire to honor the Nashville Symphony, regarded as one of the most creative and innovative orchestras in the nation today. The Crescendo roses will be featured prominently among flowers honoring Nashville’s musical artists and celebrities in the Hall of Fame Park across from Schermerhorn Symphony Center downtown.

Brenda Lee, Pam Tillis and Barbara Mandrell unveil Crescendo, the newest addition to the Nashville Music Garden Collection. The unveiling was held at Schermerhorn Symphony Center’s Martha Rivers Ingram Garden Courtyard.  Each of these ladies have been honored with their own roses from the Nashville Music Garden and shared what that feels like with attendees.

During the press conference Barbara Mandrell shares with attendees her love of gardening and the honor of being recognized with two roses and a daylily in the Nashville Music Garden Collection.

Brenda Lee describes her rose as a little Dynamite just like her but joked she wish her rose had “big blooms” like the Dolly Parton rose.

The Crescendo rose is a fragrant cream and pink blend hybrid tea rose bred from two award-winning parents, ‘Gemini’ and ‘New Zealand.’ This high-centered, exhibition quality hybrid with large dark green glossy foliage and excellent garden performance was developed by noted hybridizer Keith Zary.

Pat Bullard, founder of the Nashville Music Garden describes Crescendo for symphony patron and volunteer Julie Boehm and James Gooch, Chairman of the Nashville Symphony Board of Directors.  She says, “The fragrance is strong enough to fill a room from a single bloom and memorable enough to never be confused with any other rose.”

The tribute to the Nashville Symphony was inspired by the Nashville Music Garden, the unique floral symbol of musical appreciation in the heart of ‘Music City,’ and the Nashville Rose Society.

The Crescendo rose is available locally for purchase at Creekside Garden Center located at 106 Harding Place (615-356-2201).
